One of the things that makes Red Bird special is that we only work with qualified and experienced teachers.

Some people seem surprised that all tutors aren’t teachers! But anyone can set themselves up as a tutor without the need for any training.

I’m passionate about the advantages of using professional teachers as tutors.

Current

Firstly, the vast majority of the teachers who tutor for us are either still in the classroom during the week or have recently left.  They have a full working knowledge of the school curriculum and are aware of the changes that take place each year, because they are at the chalk-face.

Red Bird attracts people who are passionate about education. Our tutors regularly borrow books from our Red Bird professional development library. They keep up with the latest in educational thinking using social media, TED talks and podcast.

Our Primary tutors are very aware of expectations for each year group and understand how to prepare young learners for Year 6 SATs.  Our Secondary tutors all teach exam year groups and some are exam markers.

All this means that our tutors can make quick decisions about the best content to follow with our learners. They use their years of experience to create quick and effective personalised programmes for each learner.

Experienced

Secondly, we encourage tutors to push themselves out of their comfort zones. We give them experience in year groups they may not have previously worked in.

I’ve always advocated teaching a wide spread of year groups in schools. A teacher’s knowledge of where a child has come from and where they are going is vital. It helps tutors look at learners’ individual learning journeys and meet each one exactly where they are.

Our tutors’ knowledge of the progression of skills is gold dust to us.  My eyes light up when I hear that a teacher has taught in several key stages as I know that they are the sort of person that will jump into a situation with both feet and enthusiasm.
